Fire & Build is a three-day, hands-on workshop exploring both wood firing and kiln construction. Over the course of three days, participants will fire multiple wood-fired kilns while taking an in-depth look at the design and construction of kiln arches.
Together we will fire the Compact Wood Kiln and the Linwood Rocket Kiln (twice), then shift our focus to kiln building by examining several styles of arch, discussing the principles behind their design, and constructing an arch for a new heat recuperator kiln that Judah has been developing for nearly five .
Participants are welcome to bring 20–25 small to medium-sized pots to be fired during the workshop. Approximately one month before the event, all participants will be invited to a live Zoom meeting to discuss the work they plan to bring, ask questions, and prepare for the firings.
Schedule
Monday
8:00 AM – Arrival and introductions
• Load the Compact Wood Kiln and begin firing by 11:00 AM
• Load the Linwood Rocket Kiln and begin firing by 1:00 PM
• Fire both kilns to Cone 10 by late evening
• Optional late-night reduction cooling for those who want to stay involved
Tuesday
9:00 AM – Begin
• Unload and reload the Linwood Rocket Kiln
• Fire the Rocket Kiln to Cone 10
• Build and install the arch on the new Heat Recuperator Kiln
Wednesday
9:00 AM – Begin
• Illustrated lecture on kiln design and construction, with a focus on arches
• Open discussion on kiln design and firing methods
• Unload both kilns
• Evaluate firing results, pack pots, and conclude around 2:00–3:00 PM

Lunches and dinners are included and will be prepared by our amazing resident chef, Franklin Hunter.
